The SS Kakapo (built in Grangemouth, Scotland in 1898 and named after a endemic bird in New Zealand) ran ashore during a great storm while taking it's maiden voyage from Swansey, Wales to Sydney, Australia. Captain Niels Peter Fischer Nicolayson allegedly mistook Chapman's Peak for Cape Point and instructed his crew to "turn to port" which resulted in the ship ramming full-speed onto Noordhoek beach in 1900. Making this ship an unfortunate victim of a navigational error. No lives were lost but ego's were bruised. The wreck can still be found under Noordhoek Beach in Cape Town, South Africa.
